This painting of Calvin Owens was a commission for the cover of his CD, “I Ain’t Gonna Be Yo’ Dog No Mo’ ”. Working with photographer Donovan Allen, I chose three photographs to use for the painting that seemed to best communicate Calvin’s energy and personality onstage while playing and conducting his orchestra. Nicknamed “the Maestro”, he was a visionary, and a legendary composer and bandleader. He saw jazz and blues as the same, saying “People think of the trumpet as being a jazz instrument, and it is. But it’s blues, too. So even when I do jazz, it’s still the blues. I like to just think of myself as a musician.” Calvin Owens passed away in 2008.
