Obo Addy
oil on linen, 24" x 36"
This painting of Obo Addy was taken from my photograph of his performance with Thara Memory and the Portland Festival Symphony in Portland’s Washington Park. Born in Ghana, and well known worldwide, Obo Addy is one of the key originators of “Worldbeat” music. His presence on stage brings African musical history to life. Besides being a master drummer, composer, and teacher, he has also founded the Homowo African Arts and Cultures Organization, which creates cultural awareness and understanding through their educational programs, annual festival, and performing groups which tour the world. In 1996, Obo was the first African born artist to be awarded the National Heritage Fellowship Award by the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about Obo Addy, visit his website.
