COMMISSIONING A PORTRAIT
FEES AND PROCEDURE
Creating an oil (or pencil) portrait begins with a personal visit with the client, giving the artist an opportunity to get acquainted with the subject and to discuss the desired elements of the portrait such as the size, pose, setting, and other details.
Next, a photo session will be scheduled and the photographs will be shared with the client. Once the photograph that best captures the personality of the subject is chosen, a pencil drawing and color sketch will be submitted to assure proper layout, likeness, and color accuracy (pencil portraits will skip this step). Diane is also able to combine more than one photo or add extra details that will make for the best possible portrait. The goal is to go beyond the photograph and make the portrait truly unique and special.
After the sketches are approved, Diane will then return to her studio to proceed with the final artwork, which will take a minimum of six weeks to finish for a painting, and a minimum of two weeks to finish for a drawing.
Portrait fees start at $2,500 for a head and shoulders oil portrait. Black and white pencil portraits start at $300 for a head and shoulders portrait. There is a charge of 50% of the initial fee for each additional subject in oil, 75% for pencil. Payment of one-half of the total amount is due at the signing of the contract. Detailed portrait fee information is below, and on the portrait fees page.
Diane will be happy to answer any further questions and can be reached at 503-253-0865.
