Bennie Maupin

Charcoal on Stonehenge, 14×18”
SOLD

Artist comment: This portrait was created for Thara Memory’s American Music Program benefit concert in 2014, and together with my portrait of Terrell Stafford, raised $2000 for the program! I rarely use another photographer’s photo, but I am very grateful to Eric Pozza for letting me use his wonderful photo of Bennie. Eric’s work can be seen at CanberraJazz.net.

Lou Donaldson

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×19”
SOLD

Artist comment: I had never seen Lou Donaldson perform before his unforgettable PDX Jazz performance at the at the Crystal Ballroom in 2009. At age 82, he put on a great show, captivating the audience with his signature soul bluesy sound on his saxophone, and telling stories in between. I enjoyed every moment, and left the concert a true fan. This drawing was taken from one of the many photos I took of him at that concert.

Nancy King & Glen Moore

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×20”
SOLD

Artist comment: This drawing of Nancy King and Glen Moore is a tribute to these Portland Oregon jazz treasures. They met in 1960, and have recorded and performed together off and on ever since. Magic happens when they get together, and this performance in 2009 was no exception. I’ve photographed them countless times, but this night was special, both in the way they performed together, and in the way I was able to photograph them. The result is a drawing that I hope reflects their feeling for the music that they collaborate on so well.

Bobby Hutcherson

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×22”
$450

Artist comment: This drawing of Bobby Hutcherson was taken from one of the many photographs I took at his Crystal Ballroom performance at the 2009 PDX Jazz Festival. When he took the stage, I noticed that there was an oxygen tank behind him, but he never needed it, although he had moments where he seemed tired and short of breath. As he got further into his set, he seemed to come alive and gain strength, which is why I chose this particular photo for the drawing… it showed the power that he gained from performing his music.

McCoy Tyner

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×22”
$450
To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Artist comment: This drawing of McCoy Tyner was taken from a photo I took of him at his 2009 PDX Jazz performance at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. I was positioned in the balcony, so I was able to capture the inside workings of the piano as well Tyner’s energy as he played. Sitting at center stage, he and his quartet filled the concert hall with the sound of his Grammy winning compositions, making for an unforgettable performance.
