Artist comment: This drawing of Randy Weston was taken from one of my photographs of him at his PDX Jazz Festival Jazz Conversation in 2011. Marty Hughly’s interview with him was informative, as the NEA Jazz Master discussed the civil rights movement, his experiences in Africa, and their connections to jazz. Two of the many memorable quotes from that conversation were “every one of us is standing on the shoulders of our ancestors”, and “mother nature is the original orchestra”.
