Artist comment: This drawing of Bobby Watson was taken from my photograph of him at the 2013 PDX Jazz Festival Jazz Conversation at PSU, along with Javon Jackson. The two saxophonists were interviewed by trumpeter Farnell Newton, and the conversation included stories of their time with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Bobby was very animated as he spoke, and when I realized that I had captured him playing “air sax”, I knew this was the photo I would use for his portrait.
