Artist comment: The first musician portrait I painted was in 1998, and my subject was Linda Hornbuckle.  For the painting (which appeared on her CD “Clearly”) I photographed her at Music Millenium, and later in her living room as she sang.  Sadly, Linda passed away in October 2014, after a two year battle with cancer.  I will always remember this beautiful woman and her beautiful voice.  The community will always remember her as the great soul diva of the Northwest.

$4000

Limited edition prints are available
20″x30″- $300 13″x20″- $150

Artist comment: This painting of Thara Memory was created to honor his induction into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall of Fame in 2006. Thara is a respected conductor, composer, and educator. When I asked him if I could take photos for a painting, he looked at me and said “You know, I don’t just play trumpet”… hence the three images in the painting. His American Music Program has won numerous awards, and has sent graduates to prestigious schools such as Berklee College of Music and Juilliard. Thara received his first Grammy award in 2013 and was presented with his honorary doctor of music degree from Berklee College of Music in 2014.

Glen Moore

$4000
To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Limited edition prints are available
20″x30″- $300 13″x20″- $150

Artist comment: This painting of Glen Moore was inspired by watching his performances which can be described as an ongoing joyful dance with his bass. His acoustic style of jazz is fascinating to listen to and watch, and when I learned he was going to be inducted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall of Fame, I started taking photos for the painting. Glen is an accomplished jazz musician, and is a founding member of the group Oregon. For the past 30 years, he has played the massive Klotz bass fiddle which was crafted in 1715. Paul Delay

Oil on linen, 18×24”
SOLD

Limited edition prints are available
15″x20″- $150

Artist comment: This painting of Paul deLay is a tribute to one of the most original and talented harp players in the blues world. His larger than life presence was always around the northwest (and worldwide), so much so that I think it was taken for granted that he would always be there. And so when he passed away at the age of 55, it took most fans by surprise. His music was soulful, passionate, and honest. Paul wrote the song “Remember Me” while he was still in prison, two weeks before his mother died in the late 1990’s, and I chose to include a portion of these lyrics in this painting. He will be missed, but his music lives on. Rest in peace, Paul.

This painting of Buddy Guy was taken from several of my photographs of his performance with B.B. King in the summer of 2000 in Portland, Oregon. He is a legendary guitarist as well as an incredibly entertaining storyteller, and I chose to communicate all the facets of his performance by using multiple images in my painting. Limited edition prints are available
20″x30″- $300 13″x20″- $150

Artist comment: This painting was taken from my many photographs at the WOMAD festival near Seattle in the summer of 2001. This band’s name is an African word meaning “anybody” or “no one in particular”, and the music is a fusion of Afrobeat, jazz, funk, and traditional songs. This particular image focused on one of the more interesting and dynamic drummers in the band. Visit www.lagbaja.com for more information on their music

Thara Memory III

Pencil on Stonehenge, 14×18”
$300
To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Artist comment: I have been photographing Thara Memory for years, and have created numerous portraits of him. But this is one I couldn’t resist. He was performing at Jimmy Mak’s and was sitting on stage, viewing the audience, with that expression that says it all. So I took the photo and ran with it…

Esperanza Spalding

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×20”
SOLD

Artist comment: Esperanza Spalding has performed many times at the PDX Jazz Festival, and although I was not able to take photos of her at those performances, I did photograph her at several American Music Program benefits. This drawing was created from one of my photos from the 2013 benefit. Esperanza is mesmerizing on stage, and I chose this photo to work from because it seemed to capture her essence in one of the “in between” moments of her performance.

Chick Corea

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×22”
SOLD

Artist comment: This drawing of Chick Corea was taken from a photo I took of him at his performance with Return to Forever at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in 2008. I was taking photos from the balcony, so I was able to capture the all three keyboards as well as his energy and his interaction with the band. The photo I used as reference was chosen for the intensity of his expression and for the positioning of his hands on the keyboard. I originally did a drawing of the entire band, then decided to create another drawing just to feature this great keyboardist.

Stanley Jordan III

To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Artist comment: This is my third pencil portrait of Stanley Jordan, so the next one will have to be a painting! I never get tired of listening to his music, whether he is performing a solo show, or with the Dave Matthews band, his performances are not to be missed.
