Norman Leyden

Pencil on Stonehenge, 18×20”
SOLD

Artist comment: Norman Leyden was a nationally known conductor, composer, clarinetist, and educator in Portland Oregon. He was best known as the conductor of the Oregon Symphony Pops orchestra, however he also worked with Glenn Miller during his years in the US Air Force. Most recently, Mr. Leyden had performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Pink Martini. This portrait of Norman Leyden was taken from my photos of his induction into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Norman passed away on July 23, 2014.

Charmaine Neville

Pencil on Stonehenge, 16×18”
SOLD

Artist comment: This painting of Charmaine Neville was created for a benefit concert for Sisters of the Road in Portland Oregon. Charmaine was gracious enough to donate her time to the concert, along with Reggie Houston, who she performed with at Snug Harbor in New Orleans until Reggie moved to Portland just before Katrina. Charmaine still lives and performs at Snug Harbor every Monday, and her show is not to be missed!

Artist comment: This portrait of Branford Marsalis was taken from my photograph of his 2012 Jazz Conversation, part of the PDX Jazz outreach program. Devin Phillips, another saxophonist from New Orleans now living in Portland, interviewed him. Marsalis, the eldest brother of New Orleans’ royal family of Jazz, & Joey Calderazzo closed out the 2012 PDX Jazz Festival at the Newmark Theater.

Roy Haynes

Pencil on Stonehenge, 15×19”
SOLD

Artist comment: This drawing of Roy Haynes was inspired by his PDX Jazz Festival Jazz Conversation in 2012. He was 86 at the time… drummer Alan Jones asked him about all things jazz, and he had a lot of stories to tell. After the interview, I commented on how much I liked his boots. He was dressed impeccably, and seemed pleased that someone took notice. I found out later that, besides being an NEA Jazz Master, he had also been named one of Esquire’s Best Dressed Men in America.

Bobby Watson

Pencil on Stonehenge, 18×20”
$300
To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Artist comment: This drawing of Bobby Watson was taken from my photograph of him at the 2013 PDX Jazz Festival Jazz Conversation at PSU, along with Javon Jackson. The two saxophonists were interviewed by trumpeter Farnell Newton, and the conversation included stories of their time with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Bobby was very animated as he spoke, and when I realized that I had captured him playing “air sax”, I knew this was the photo I would use for his portrait.

Randy Weston

Pencil on Stonehenge, 14×18”
$300
To purchase, email diane@dianerussell.net

Artist comment: This drawing of Randy Weston was taken from one of my photographs of him at his PDX Jazz Festival Jazz Conversation in 2011. Marty Hughly’s interview with him was informative, as the NEA Jazz Master discussed the civil rights movement, his experiences in Africa, and their connections to jazz. Two of the many memorable quotes from that conversation were “every one of us is standing on the shoulders of our ancestors”, and “mother nature is the original orchestra”.

Linda Hornbuckle

Pencil on Stonehenge, 15×19”
SOLD

Artist comment: This drawing of Linda was taken from my photo of her at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, a few years before she passed away. She was performing her Gospel Hour, along with her beloved Janice Scroggins on keyboards. The music community lost both of these wonderful performers in 2014.
